Peter SturrockI have spent most of my life as a conventional scientist. However, I have in addition spent almost half my life studying topics that are decidedly unconventional. It is rather like being a Republican by day and a Democrat by night–which would I suspect give one keener insight into both parties. By working in both conventional and unconventional areas, I have–I believe–developed a deeper appreciation of the strengths and weaknesses of both kinds of science.

The meaning of “science” has changed over the years. The word is derived from the Latin scientia, that has as its primary meaning knowing or knowledge–and so is very broad in scope. Professor Sturrock has trod an unusual  path, combining a variety of innovative research in mainstream science with another variety of studies well outside the mainstream. Although most scientists look with a jaundiced eye on topics such as parapsychology and UFO research, he views them simply as more grist for the scientific mill, regarding topics outside the mainstream as major challenges rather than minor annoyances best swept under the rug.
